about - hisia - TruSpot

Born and raised in Tanzania, Hisia has lived in Dar Es Salaam and Arusha, had his primary education in the UK, and is currently studying International Business Administration at the United States International University – Africa in Nairobi, Kenya. The smooth and soulful Hisia grew up dreaming of becoming a star often standing in front of the mirror and singing along to the tunes of R&B stars like R.Kelly, Boys2Men and Michael Jackson. “Music is food for the soul. It has been my lifelong goal to make good music and enlighten people’s lives through my craft. I always knew I was going to be a star, it was only a matter of when and how.”
The singer, songwriter, performing artist, entrepreneur and now recording artist showed interest and ability to sing at a very young age, from singing in his brothers’ high school competitions in the UK while he was still in primary, to winning his first talent competition at age 13 at Triple A club in Arusha 2004.
He later on started singing in bands as a background vocalist and did back vocals for gospel musicians in Arusha. He then moved to Nairobi, Kenya where he joined a music school called Sauti Academy, which further exposed him to the world of live performances. His music is a blend of Neo-soul, blues, sweet reggae and afro-pop. “You have one of the best voice’s I have ever heard” – Atemi Oyungu, (a songstress and one of the best female vocalists in Nairobi, Kenya). Hisia now performs live with a four piece band and himself on the vocals and sometimes on guitar.

Hisia is a Swahili word which means ‘feeling’ and/or ‘emotion’, thus describing to a large degree the musicality of this particular artist. Hisia is known for his smooth vocals, good humor and his sensuality. “You should never let this guy sing for your girlfriend” as the Tusker Project Fame host Doctor Mitch was once jokingly quoted during the show.
Many artists struggle to establish their musical identity, laboriously trying on different musical styles like a piece of clothing, looking to find what fits. But there are others that emerge fully formed, in full command of their craft, their identity and their music. Hisia fits firmly in the latter category. His new single, Just For You is a captivating and moving debut that heralds the arrival of a gifted and significant new talent, one whose music feels familiar in the best possible way, while striking out on its own territory. “This first single is a dedication to my fans, and all the people that supported me through my musical journey. It’s my way of saying thank you.”

Hisia is also a finalist of this year’s Tusker Project Fame season 6, which is East Africa’s biggest singing contest covering six countries; Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan. With over 8million viewers on the show and Hisia being the only Tanzanian who never went on probation alone (in the history of the show) Hisia was able to create for himself a strong following and a bigger fan base which really pushed his career a step further. “You may have not won the competition, but you won our hearts” - a fan commented after the TPF6 show.
With the release of his first single “Just For You” which got over 7000 downloads within the first 72hours, the song is already topping the charts in big towns and cities in East Africa and especially in Tanzania, to mention a few - Arusha, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and Mbeya. Hisia is now working on the release of his debut album which is due to be released in early 2015. As a young and upcoming artist Hisia has been compared to the likes of Labi Siffre, Usher Raymond, D’Angelo, John Legend, Ne-yo and Musiq Soulchild.
